Welcome to Anacortes! We are so glad that you are here.
Ethan and Zeph are currently with their father in Illinois because their mother passed away. However, Zeph will be back in Anacortes on June 11 and Ethan will be back in August. In the meantime, please feel free to make the apartment feel like home. You can move the furniture and rearrange the kitchen as much as you like. All the food in the apartment is for you! Please eat it or, if you don’t like it, give it away.
This binder has some basic information that you might find useful as you acclimate to Anacortes.
If you have an emergency, please call 9-1-1. In the United States, 911 should work on phones even without a sim card. When the dispatcher asks, tell them your address.
Also tell the dispatcher that you are in the side unit, not the main house. If possible, unlock the door or wait on the driveway for emergency services to arrive.
If for whatever reason you cannot call 911, go to the neighbors on either side of the house and knock. Ask them to call 911 for you. You can also go to Steinman’s just down the street (the little shop) and ask for help there.
If you require assistance but it is not an emergency, look at the hard copy of this packet for contact information for us and some friendly neighbors.
Washington State could experience a serious earthquake at any time. A very large earthquake could be followed by a tsunami. It’s important to be prepared for either.
If you feel the ground start to shake:
Drop, Cover, and Hold
Or you can return to Zeph’s house, which is higher than where a tsunami is expected to reach. You should remain on higher ground until you are sure no tsunami is incoming. You can check for the most recent tsunami information at: https://www.tsunami.gov/. You can also ask the neighbors for assistance.
The apartment is equipped with two smoke detectors. One is in the bedroom and one is in the kitchen.
If it goes off and you are not sure why, please evacuate the apartment and call 911. It is possible that it is detecting carbon monoxide and not a fire, in which case you would not be safe inside. The fire department can also help you turn it off.
There are two fire extinguishers. One is in the garage on the shelf. One is in the kitchen behind the door.
Please do not smoke in the ADU!!!
Driveway: Please leave the driveway empty as the neighbor sometimes uses it. It is okay for the neighbor to park there as long as they don't block the whole driveway.
House: This is where Zeph and Ethan live.
ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit): This is where you live.
Garden and yard
Garbage and recycling collection
See your hard copy packet for the internet SSID and password.
All the food in the ADU is for you. There is a coupon to Good Bagels (2001 Commercial Ave, Anacortes, WA 98221), where you can purchase some bagels. There is also an envelope with some money to purchase food until Zeph gets back.
The garage has food. Some of it is emergency food. Please do not eat any of this food:
However, the other food is good to eat:
We do our shopping at Safeway, just down the street. The Market is the best place to get buckwheat in town.
When Zeph gets back, he can get to Costco, which may have more options.
You can open and close the garage door using the clicker button. Make sure the garage door closes all the way before leaving. Sometimes, it will reopen if something crosses the threshold.
Zeph is a firefighter. If there is a fire or medical emergency at night, he needs to take the car to drive to the fire station. As a result, the garage door may open at night. Do not be surprised if someone comes or goes from the garage at night. If this wakes you up at night, tell Zeph to figure out a solution. The door to the ADU has a separate lock from the garage door that you can keep locked at night.
There are two vegetable beds:
They should be okay for two weeks. if you wanted, you could water them with the hose until the soil is dark brown. There is also dill right outside the apartment.
It isn’t growing very well because we’ve never grown dill before. If you see any that is ready to harvest, please feel free to harvest it.
Please also feel free to harvest the outside leaves of the spinach plants.
There is a birdfeeder outside. If you want to attract more birds, you can refill it from the birdseed in the garage. Please don’t feel the need to do so, however.
Deer may pass through the yard. That is normal, but if they are eating the vegetables, you can make a loud noise or clap at them and they will leave.
There is a garbage and recycling bin under the sink and a garbage bin in the bathroom. Garbage, recycling, and compost are picked up every Monday.
Cardboard, paper, cleaned plastic, and cleaned glass go into the blue bin. Plants, bones, meat, and eggshells go into the green bin. Everything else goes into the gray bin.
There is a laundry machine and dryer in the garage. The soap is directly on top. To use the washer, place all your clothes in the bin, put a soap tablet in, put the lid down, and press the Start button (the big gray button on the bottom right). To use the dryer, clean the lint first and put your wet clothes in. Then, turn the dryer to the “leaf” symbol and press the knob on the right.
The kitchen is not equipped with a dishwasher.
There is a broom, vacuum, rags, and cleaning supplies in the ADU. Please feel free to use them.
The kitchen has an electric oven, electric stove, and microwave. You can turn the stove on with a knob. For the oven, here is a conversion table:
Celsius (C) | Fahrenheit (F) |
---|---|
150 | 300 |

177 | 350 |
190 | 375 |

There is a bus stop directly outside. It is the 410 line on Skagit transit. You can find more information about them here: https://strweb.skagittransit.org/. There is also a Moovit app that you can download to use the bus.
There is a black bicycle in the garage. Feel free to use it! This is a great way to get around town. If you bike, please wear the helmet.
The white bicycle is Zeph’s. Please do not use it.
